Screaming Latkes!

I did this little post for Squid Ink about one of my favorite holiday books of all time, Lemony Snicket’s The Latke Who Couldn’t Stop Screaming: A Christmas Story. I say “of all time,” but I only just discovered it last year while roaming around a Barnes & Noble. It made me giggle–and still does with every reading. I bought a bunch and gave them as gifts.

While it is a quirky kids book about Hanukkah and being misunderstood, I actually think its a fun little foodie book. After all, the main character is an irate golden latke screaming  “AHHHHHHHHHH” through the streets of of his snowy village. You almost feel sorry for him…and then you kind of crave him. With a dollop of applesauce and sour cream. Mmmm…

I don’t often make latkes, but I do love a good potato pancake. I mean, who doesn’t, whether you celebrate Hanukkah or not. There are latke recipes of every ilk around the internets right now, but I like this informative video of Evan Kleiman making The Perfect Latke. Just watch when you put the little buggers in a pan of hot oil–you don’t want any to escape.
