Chow Balla Meets the Ciao Balla

I admit: It’s difficult keeping up with all of the food trucks these days. At least three seem to pop up any given week in L.A., all with clever names, ambitious menus, and dishing out some pretty decent food. So when I first heard about Great Balls on Tires, it sort of breezed by me.

A truck that specializes in meatballs and other edible things in ‘ball’ form? The motto is “Meat Our Balls.” Way too teenage boy, I thought; too punny. I figured the focus was all ball jokes and not good food. I was wrong.

Yes, the truck is owned and operated by a bunch of young guys, so ball jokes are NOT lost on them (nor me for that matter). But the menu is more clever than teenager antics: There’s the Incrediball, sliders made with kobe-beef meatballs, bacon, Gruyere, garlic aioli and arugula; and the Ballywood, garam masala-spiced chicken meatballs with madras currry sauce and tamato and cilantro chutnies. These are some serious balls (oof, I know). And then, of course, the Ciao Balla. How could I not?

CB Weekend: AWFF, Feast of San Gennaro, Craft Beers, MORE

This is one of those weekends where there are so many big events happening at once, it’s hard to choose what to do. Or you can just plan carefully and hit several back to back (beer crawl and AWFF?… oof). Take your pick, get your fill, be safe and have fun!

Friday through Sunday: Feast of San Gennaro
The annual Precious Cheese Feast of San Gennaro is underway, which Jimmy Kimmel and Adam Carolla started nine years ago. The street fest brings a taste of Little Italy to Hollywood with food (pizza, cannoli, gelato, meatballs and “gravy”), bands, bocce, carnival rides and more. Some of the restaurants taking part include Frankie’s on Melrose, a place you’ve driven by a million times and wondered about (it’s actually pretty great for Italian-American classics), and Vito’s Pizza, which I believe to have best NY-style slice in town. The fancy Prima Notte fundraiser takes place tonight ($100), and the main event kicks off on Friday. Tickets to get in to the carnival are $5; food costs extra. 1651 N. Highland Ave., Hollywood; 11am-11pm all days

Saturday: L.A. Craft Beer Crawl
Drink craft brews handpicked by The Beer Chicks, a.k.a. the lovely Christina Perozzi and Hallie Beaune, in the bars of Cedd Moses, while hitting food trucks selected by Jonathan Gold in between stops. Too much fun. The $49 ticket gets you a tasting glass and a wristband so you can wonder around the Downtown spots to sample more than 50 brews, including special limited-edition seasonals that haven’t been released yet. Peruse the menu here (pdf). Seven Grand, Casey’s Irish Bar, Cana Rum Bar, Broaway Bar, Golden Gopher, Cole’s, Las Perlas; 3 to 8pm
