I’ve called it home for almost 10 years, but I’m still harsh on Pasadena dining. With good reason: It mostly blows. But every now and then I stumble across something I’ll actually visit more than once–Taco Station is one of those spots.
I sound like a broken record when I give out my go-tos in the ‘Dena: I’m a big fan of Daisy Mint for Thai, and Euro Pane‘s chicken salad on rosemary-currant bread has been my favorite sandwich for years. I’m embarrassed to say I just discovered Cham Korean Bistro and love it (even if the website suggests no actual Korean people eat there). And I can’t tell you how excited I am that Intelligentsia is in Old Town, serving food from Heirloom LA.
Everything else is…tolerable. Good, but just good. Put it this way: No one’s driving across town for our restaurants like we do for Lucques, Hungry Cat, The Bazaar or the Mozzas. But we have what we need, and when I need a quick, cheap bite, I’ll go to Taco Station.

I admit: It’s difficult keeping up with all of the food trucks these days. At least three seem to pop up any given week in L.A., all with clever names, ambitious menus, and dishing out some pretty decent food. So when I first heard about Great Balls on Tires, it sort of breezed by me.
A truck that specializes in meatballs and other edible things in ‘ball’ form? The motto is “Meat Our Balls.” Way too teenage boy, I thought; too punny. I figured the focus was all ball jokes and not good food. I was wrong.
Yes, the truck is owned and operated by a bunch of young guys, so ball jokes are NOT lost on them (nor me for that matter). But the menu is more clever than teenager antics: There’s the Incrediball, sliders made with kobe-beef meatballs, bacon, Gruyere, garlic aioli and arugula; and the Ballywood, garam masala-spiced chicken meatballs with madras currry sauce and tamato and cilantro chutnies. These are some serious balls (oof, I know). And then, of course, the Ciao Balla. How could I not?
